On Turkey Burgers

I don’t eat a lot of red meat. I’ve never cared for steak all that much, cows are adorable, and I’m pretty sure that too much red meat is not great for you so over time the amount I consume has dwindled. I do like a burger every once in a while or a steak burrito, but I mostly eat a lot of chicken and ground turkey. In fact, Patrick and I have become masters of the chicken marinade and most weeks there’s at least one pound of ground turkey in our fridge.

It’s so versatile – although we normally use it for spaghetti or tacos. When the weather gets warmer, we also start to use the grill a lot more. Like, A LOT more. If I had the time, I would grill at least one of my meals every day in the summer. It’s just so fun and peaceful and delicious. That being said, we normally end up making a lot of frozen veggie burgers because, as previously mentioned, I don’t eat a lot of beef and I do not like turkey burgers.

Here’s the deal, though: I recently figured out exactly why I don’t love turkey burgers. 99% of the time they’re too dry (this is probably not groundbreaking to you) and I don’t love the sheer amount of turkey I am biting into.

That said, I want to like turkey burgers! And so begins my summer of figuring out the ideal recipe to yield the perfect turkey burger. I plan to document this adventure (how many times have I written that here) and will share all of my attempts! My first idea is to make a turkey smashburger, cooked in oil or butter or something to help maintain some moisture. Maybe I’ll recruit Patrick to try to make some homemade burger buns… Time will tell.

If you have any great ideas, send them my way! I hope to make this first attempt next week when life settles down ever so slightly. Wish me luck!
