This Week: Gotcha Day!

Folks, I am tired. My body has been achy and sore, I’ve been sleeping in far more this week, and I generally feel a little run down and worn out. I think it may have something to do with the increased pollen counts this week because I otherwise don’t feel sick or bad. Just totally wiped! Patrick and I got a couple’s massage this week, which was excellent but really accentuated just how fatigued my muscles are… And just how much tension I carry in my shoulders and neck – ouch! Nonetheless, life continues to be oh so good and I am getting more and more excited for all that is coming up in this next season. Here’s to another fantastic week!

What I’m…

…Reading: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Opinions by Roxane Gay. In continuing with my goal to read more “classics,” I decided to reread Brave New World since I barely even skimmed it in high school. That book is absolutely WHACK. I’m enjoying it and have plenty, plenty of thoughts but I am mostly shocked Magnolia ISD let us read this book! I’d be really curious to hear the critical analysis that came with it…

Not your typical pool read… Featuring Patrick’s foot.

…Eating: Delicious food during DC Restaurant Week! On Monday night Patrick and I went to Pappe, a modern Indian food restaurant, and it was absolutely delicious. We sat outside because the weather was stunning and I only got bitten by a few mosquitoes! On Sunday we’re going to Ruthie’s All Day for lunch. We used to live less than 0.2 miles away from there but only went once on a freezing day (and sat outside…), so I’m excited to try it again!

…Wearing: Antiperspirant. Can I be TMI for a second? I have tried to switch to aluminum free deodorant multiple times in my life now and it is just not for me. I know that supposedly you detox and then eventually you smell less bad and maybe even sweat less (never did fact check that one), but I just got sick of worrying about being smelly. While I aspire to be as crunchy as I once was during the 2010s, I simply cannot negotiate this.

…Listening to: The Mountain is You by Chance Peña. Patrick and I are going to a music festival in September and he’ll be performing!

…Drinking: Less caffeine?! My morning caffeination routine is pretty solid. Get up, put on glasses, make a half carafe of coffee, and drink two mugs of it. Sometimes in the afternoon I’ll even make another coffee beverage if I’m dragging a bit. Lately, though, I have one mug of coffee in the AM and then don’t feel inspired to pour myself a second. I haven’t even been bringing my second cup to work with me! Maybe it’s the heat, maybe I’ve been sleeping more (although it doesn’t feel like it), but the realization that I’ve been drinking less coffee has been odd for me.

…Thinking About: 7 sweet years with Bear and Alaska. We just celebrated their ‘Gotcha Day’ yesterday! On August 15, 2017, we picked them up and drove them to our first little apartment in Austin. And to think we thought they were old dogs way back then! It has been a rollercoaster with these two but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. We love them so, so much!

…Excited For: A week off of running! Can you tell my body is barely hanging on? When am I ever excited to not run? After my PR attempt next weekend, I am planning to take about a week off of running to let my body recover and reset. I know it’s bad, but I didn’t even take a full week off after running 50 miles of MMT… Let that be a testament to how hard this speed training has been on my body! I can’t help but feel like these short legs are built to go up mountains slowly instead of across pavement quickly. I’m so excited for the half marathon too though!

I hope you all are thriving this week and soaking up every bit of every day! Here’s to a wonderful weekend ahead.

Love,

JN
