Hello and happy Monday! I don’t know about you, but I had a wonderful weekend. It was fun and active and adventurous, and now I am having one of those Mondays where sitting at a desk with a big cup of coffee doesn’t feel half bad.
Can you believe it’s going to be October this week?! I can and I can’t. I’m already on week five of my new job. It’s insane how fast time has flown this month! I mean, I’ve been meaning to make pumpkin scones for the last week and just keep forgetting/running out of time. Maybe tonight is the night…
Here’s what I’ve been…
…Reading: I’ve got a weird assortment of books going at the moment. I’m still trucking through Project Hail Mary (it’s very long) and On the Line, and now I’ve also started The Hollow by Agatha Christie. Sue me! I can’t resist an Agatha book!
By the way, don’t forget that we’re (we being whoever feels so inclined) all reading Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie in October. You may also see it under the title of A Haunting in Venice. Wheeeee!
…Eating: Camp meal. We went camping this weekend! We were supposed to go Friday-Sunday but then it rained a lot and one of our tent poles snapped, so we went home on Saturday afternoon. We were out at Trout Pond Recreation Area to volunteer at a race and it was a super fun time.

On Saturday morning we made breakfast tacos at the campsite and crappy french press coffee. At the aid station, I used my camp stove to make bacon quesadillas for runners. (I made one for myself at home yesterday!) Because we didn’t camp out on Saturday night, we didn’t get to make my favorite camp meal. We literally just call it camp meal.
The reason why camp meal works so well is: 1) it’s hearty, 2) it’s tasty, 3) it’s fast, and 4) the ingredients are versatile for other camp meals.
It includes a tortilla with mashed potatoes, sauteed bell pepper and onion, and a sausage. If you’re feeling fancy, serve a caesar salad kit on the side. YUM! We made this last night at home on the grill.

…Eyeing: Look, I’ve written before on this blog that I don’t want to try to convince people to buy things. In fact, we should all be buying significantly less. That said, I have really been wanting one of these Patagonia bags. The bag I use for my running gear/adventure bag is old and not the best for its purpose. I can’t bring myself to buy this new Patagonia bag because I don’t actually need it, but boy I want it.
…Listening to: If We Were Vampires (feat. Wesley Schultz) by Noah Kahan. Man, this is a beautiful song.
…Wearing: Trader Joe’s pumpkin ultra-moisturizing hand lotion. Y’all, this smells so good. It smells like a classic pumpkin candle that you’d buy from Target and is a pretty good lotion too.
…Thinking About: More trail running. I realized recently that I’ve only been trail running 2-3 times all summer, which is sort of insane. Weirdly, I haven’t really wanted to?? I think I was a tad burned out post-MMT. That said, I have some fun races lined up for the remainder of the year and I need to get my trail legs back for them! Patrick and I both did our long runs at Rock Creek yesterday to get back in the groove.

…Excited For: Cooler days ahead. I am very hopeful that October will deliver on some cooler, fall-like weather. We’ve had a few really pleasant days and mornings throughout September, but I’d love to reliably wear a sweatshirt every day.

I hope you have a great week ahead! So much joy to be found and created.
Love,
JN
