Turkey Burger Attempt #1

Hello and happy April! This weekend was full of fun errands and time outside and I am exhausted – in a very good way. The weather was variable with some sunshine but mostly gray, overcast days. On Saturday, Patrick and I went to the farmer’s market and a new Parisian bakery. The sun was out and it was comfortably warm, so I thought it would be a great time to bust out the grill for the first time this season (and at the new house) to make my first turkey burger attempt.

I decided to follow this recipe from Downshiftology and only realized mid-burger forming that these burgers are meant for the stove, not the grill. I decided to not make any changes but to grill them and see how it all worked out.

They were super easy to make, though the propane tank ran out halfway through so I had to swap the canister and it took longer to cook than expected. I did use lean ground turkey, which I don’t think is the right move. Obviously I know I’m not making regular burgers and, as such, they won’t taste the same but I really want the patty to look less pale. Maybe I need to douse it in a soy sauce/brown sugar mixture? We’ll see.

We also had some grilled asparagus and roasted potato to go with it. We topped our burgers with pepperjack cheese, tomato, lettuce, red onion, pickle, and mayo and ketchup. At first they were dry-ish, but after the tomato started to mix with the rest of the toppings, it was more moist. I realize that entire sentence likely gives a lot of people the ick but I’m not sorry for it.

All in all, I’d give this burger a 5 out of a 10. It wasn’t the worst turkey burger I’ve ever had, but it also wasn’t the best turkey burger I’ve ever had. Since it was my first attempt, this also felt like a good level setting attempt.

A couple takeaways for next time:

  • Use nicer burger buns
  • Form the patties even thinner
  • Get Kraft singles
  • Needs additional moisture from something – fat/oil in mix, sauce on top? IDK
    • Maybe try using the griddle on the grill, rather than directly on the rack?

Stay tuned for my next attempt!
