Good morning and happy Friday! How’s your week been? It’s nearly Halloween and I have no idea what I am going to wear. I need to make a trip to Spirit Halloween to peruse their options. I’ve not really dressed up for Halloween in the past (too much work), so I am looking forward to it!
Early voting has started, so please please please make a plan and go vote! If you like to live on the edge, you can go vote on November 5, but it feels pretty good to take care of it early. You can go to https://www.vote.org/polling-place-locator/ to find your polling place! Have fun!
Here’s what I’m…
…Reading: The Magic of 100 Miles by Victoria Weeks. There’s a quarterly magazine called Highland Outdoors that covers pretty much all the best outdoor opportunities, adventures, and happenings in the greater Blue Ridge/Appalachian+ area and our Airbnb host had the Summer 2024 copy on the table when we arrived. The Magic of 100 Miles was one of the essays in this edition and it was excellent and inspirational.
…Eating: Steel cut oats with quinoa mixed in. Hear me out! Patrick did this with some steel cut oats I made and I thought it was weird and very #fitfluencer. Then I tried it. Somehow the texture of the quinoa works with the oats and you can’t taste it! Plus it’s a nice addition of protein. #fitfluencer it is, I guess!
…Wearing: My brand new New Balance 1080 v14s! I’ve been on the hunt for a really comfortable shoe for my long runs and easy miles. I tried the Brooks Glycerin Max and was seriously unimpressed… and it cost $200 so the disappointment was magnified. So far, the New Balance shoes have been cushiony and responsive and light and I think I’m into it. I’ve only put about 10 miles on the shoes so far, and I don’t think I’d wear them for workouts, but they’re doing their job well.
P.S. My go to workout shoe (for tempo or speed work) is the Asics Novablast 4. That thing is so comfortable and light and fast. I own three pairs…
…Listening to: Yes Please by Amy Poehler. I’m not much of an audiobook person, but I’ve been listening to podcasts more and more at the gym (instead of aggressive big booty mixes and the like) so I wanted to try something different! It’s a great audiobook and I’ve been enjoying it immensely. I think I am going to try Leslie F*cking Jones by Leslie Jones for my next one.
…Trying: To foam roll a little more. My hips are exceptionally tight all the time lately and I think it’s because I’ve been majorly neglecting them with my foam roller. Orrr I could get a massage… That sounds pretty sweet, too!
…Thinking About: Something serious. The woman who was murdered in broadlight while on a run on a popular running path in Tennessee. I could absolutely rage about this. I’m not even sure I could write a coherent essay about the topic matter because my thoughts and feelings are too messy and raw. That said, leave. women. alone. These horrific stories do not make me scared to run alone. They make me angrier. This is not a women running alone issue. This is a men attacking women issue.
…Excited For: Our weekend in WV! We got here last night and our cabin is so cozy and nice. The weather is very cool and the trees are beautiful out here.
I hope you’re ready for a wonderful weekend ahead. And don’t forget to vote!
Love,
JN
