MOVE·MENT: the progressive development of a poem or story.

this week #25

Hi! How are you? It’s been a pretty wild few weeks. Do you constantly feel like you’re about to crash out? Is your every conversation about the doom and gloom that is the state of our democracy? Understandable. 100%. But I’m going to hold your hand while I say this: you need to get it together.

Virginia and New Jersey are electing new governors (+ a bunch of state house seats) this year. 16 states – SIXTEEN – are holding special elections to fill 38 (THIRTY EIGHT!!!) state and local seats. Groups like Democracy Forward, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, and Public Citizen are actively suing the Trump Administration for their unamerican, unconstitutional bullshit.

If you feel out of control and like there’s nothing you can do, you’re wrong. If you’re in a position financially to give, support one of those orgs or the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (supports state level races). If money is tight or the future of your finances makes you anxious, look at these upcoming 2025 elections and see if you can volunteer in any way, shape, or form. If you can’t commit to the time that’ll take, ask everyone you know and love to contact their lawmakers (5calls.org). It actually makes a difference.

I know everything is scary right now. This is not normal. Your fears and anxiety for the future of our country are valid. But, as I like to say, we’re not crashing out. We’re crashing in. You steer into the skid, right?! Or as my girl Taylor Swift said, “you crashed my party and your rental car.” Well, we may crash the car but we are definitely crashing their party.

Nothing is normal, but life continues on somehow! Sooo here’s what I’ve been…

…Reading: I’ve been in something of a reading slump, but I feel like I am coming out of it! Right now I’m working on Choose Strong by Sally McRae and The Phoenix King by Aparna Verma. The Phoenix King is somewhere between fantasy and sci-fi and I am really enjoying it. It’s so different from the other books I’ve read recently and I have no clue what will happen!

…Eating: Well, I just made these delicious high carb rice krispie treats to begin my carb load for this weekend’s 50k! They’re so yummy. And so easy to make if you don’t mind cleaning up a sticky pot afterwards!

…Wearing: Socks to bed. This might be a tad TMI, but my feet have been so busted lately. I don’t know why! This hasn’t really happened before in a training block, but the skin of my feet is so dry and calloused and it peels a lot. Gross (lol, sorry). I’ve taken to lotioning my feet every night and then immediately putting on socks so that the lotion absorbs. I think it’s working! Again, sorry. LOL.

…Listening to: A few songs on repeat! Abracadabra by Lady Gaga, I Was Made For Lovin’ You by YUNGBLUD (from the Fall Guy movie, which is hilarious), Nightmare – Reprise by Halsey, and Paint It Black – Epic Trailer Version by Hidden Citizens and Ranya. My go to songs for lifting!

…Trying: To drink less water. I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this, but I used to track my water intake and was probably (definitely) drinking too much water. Surprisingly, I am not as thirsty as I thought I’d feel!

…Thinking About: Something I heard on a Trail Society podcast. They were discussing an article about sports bras and when to replace them and the host repeated a quote that “sports bras shouldn’t have a birthday.” WHAT?! I have some sports bras that are like a decade old. Who has the money for this? Absolutely whack.

…Excited For: Our 50k this weekend! I am running Cabin Fever again. Well, we all are! It is supposed to rain all day during the race – classic! Nonetheless, I’ve so enjoyed my training so far and I am excited to get this big ole run done.

Take a deep breath. Stop text spiraling with your friends or doom scrolling on Instagram. Some is okay, but if it’s all you spend your time doing? You won’t have the energy or mental capacity to actually do something. Get it together. ❤

Love,

JN
