Happy Fall!

This may be the first time in years that I successfully resisted the urge to pretend it was fall before the autumnal equinox. This was not entirely intentional (see: previous posts about starting a new job and being quite distracted), but I am pretty pleased that I can finally lean allllll the way into this season!

Sometimes I write a bucket list for a season, sometimes I write a general seasonal to-do (or to-cook) list, and then I rarely actually accomplish anything on the list. It sets a good tone, though! Patrick and I have agreed that this fall feels promising. Summer was sort of a bust, and the weather was just bleh all summer, so we’re both ready for a change.

Truthfully, I don’t have the inspiration to put together a fall bucket list this year, BUT I do know what I am generally hoping to get out of the season and things I am looking forward to.

  • Reading a lot of books. In the morning, at night, on the porch. The more Agatha Christie, the better.
  • Recipes that require a dutch oven. Everything tastes better out of a dutch oven and that is just a fact! Patrick and I have been talking about making homemade pasta for years, and we want to pair it with Sam Sifton’s bolognese as soon as it gets cold out.
  • Pumpkin baked goods every week. Maybe a few exceptions for pecan or apple-based goods. On the list currently: pumpkin scones. I’m also excited to try pecan sticky buns!
  • Time outside. On trails, in the backyard, on a bike, I don’t care! Outside in the fresh air. We’re going camping soon and the thought of cool morning coffee outdoors is sounding fantastic.
  • More sleep. I certainly do not need a fall-themed sheet set, but I’d certainly like one!
  • Scarves. I feel like I am seeing more and more people wear scarves (especially silk) in the day to day and I think it looks fabulous.
  • That feeling when your cheeks are kind of rosy from the cold air.
  • More races! I’m excited to do a 25k in October, a really silly 50k in early November, and then the Richmond Marathon!
  • Windows open as much as possible. The weather has fluctuated so much over the last few weeks that we’ve been having to open and close the windows and turn the AC on and off so randomly. I’m ready to keep the windows open and wear a sweatshirt!

I’m sure there’s so much more that I could include on this list, but I think that captures the essence of it. Happy fall!

Love,

JN
