Hello! I’m going to complain right from the jump. Is that okay with you? I am sick and have been sick for over 9 days now! I flew to San Diego last Monday for a work trip and had a light cough by Monday evening. After a rough few days, I was sure I’d start feeling better by the time I got home Thursday night.
Well, here we are almost a week later and I’m still not feeling great. Now I’ve mostly got a cough that just won’t quit and feel more tired than I’d like. I do think I’ve turned a corner with it but am annoyed that it’s not gone yet. Hellloooo, I’d like to be running and cycling and playing outside and generally enjoying summer!
I took some cough medicine today and can confirm that it’s as gross as I remembered from my childhood. I thought that surely technology has improved and it won’t be disgusting! Wrong. I gagged. Also, some eczema on my wrist is flaring up for the first time in years?! WTF! Woe is me.
Anywayyyy, it hasn’t all been bad! I’ve leaned into taking sick leave, the weather has been nice, and between the plane rides and the sickness I’ve been reading a ton. In fact, in my convalescence (lol) I discovered the most comfortable spot on the couch, tried the honey we bought on our bike ride, and baked some cookies yesterday. It’s been a weird two weeks, but here’s what else I’ve been…
…Reading: I flew through books over the last few weeks. On my travels I finished Five Little Pigs by Agatha (I almost guessed correctly!) and Hot Dog by Bruce Kraig (I’d recommend it for non-fiction fans). I also started and finished Beach Read by Emily Henry, Vigil by George Saunders, and Wreck by Catherine Newman in a span of 5 days. I read the last two each in 24 hours…

Now I’m onto Soonish by Kelly Weinersmith and plan to start The Fury by Alex Michaelides today.
…Eating: Lots of random, delicious stuff. In San Diego I forced myself out of bed one afternoon to walk to the Ghirardelli store for a double chocolate sundae. It was so worth it

After a bunch of work travel, it’s always nice to make fresh food at home, plus I am trying to bolster my immune system! Not going into the office this week or doing any training also means I’ve had the time to leisurely make dinner or have breakfast. Truthfully? It’s pretty nice.

…Experiencing: The joys of my National Air & Space Museum membership! A few weeks back I got early access tickets to this Innovation in the Skies event that the Udvar-Hazy Center was hosting, so we went! I did mask up to be as responsible as possible! We got to peek inside a bunch of fancy planes and helicopters. The longest line though? To go inside the Boeing 777. I was baffled! You can literally walk up to a F-16 but you’d rather wait for the commercial plane? Okay!

…Drinking: JUICE. When I was in San Diego, I had one (if not two) juices every day. I love a fun juice. I like to pretend that it was healing me from this illness! I wish there were more places around me that had good smoothie and juice offerings (I will love you forever, Juiceland), but alas. Who am I kidding, I wouldn’t spend $10 on a juice in my day to day life anyway!

It’s not really juice, but I’ve also gotten quite good at making these frozen strawberry lemonades for Patrick! I need a hand juicer – stat.

…Enjoying: Watching our garden grow! You guys, there are tomatoes growing out there!!! And, just this afternoon, I used some of the mint for my homemade lemonade. I can’t wait to see how it all goes. Watering the garden each evening is so peaceful. And watching the bees flying around pollinating everything?! Don’t even get me started. Nature is amazing.

…Buying: Eeek, I cringe a bit writing this one but I have been shopping a bit… Look, being sick is boring! My impulse control is diminished! I’m trying to slowly and intentionally enhance my wardrobe over the next few months. I want clothes to make me feel put together but comfortable and still very much me. I bought myself a necklace I loved in San Diego and also bought some black jean shorts and a few T-shirt dresses online. I used to love t-shirt dresses! I’ve wanted one for a while now but couldn’t find any. Great news: Old Navy has brought them back and labeled them as “vintage” soooo…
I hope you are having a great, healthy week! Here’s to hoping I’ll be back running and cycling for the long weekend!
Love,
Juliana
