this week #68

Hello! Isn’t August a weird month? So many kids are already back to school, the weather fluctuates from horrendous to nice-ish every other week, summer feels like it is drawing on for so long but I also don’t want it to slip away… It’s a complex month!

I have to admit that I finally feel myself legitimately craving fall. Still not as urgently as years past, but something about this next season feels promising? I can’t explain it. It’s not like I’ve had an unpleasant summer, quite the contrary! I just feel extra ready to embrace the slow down that fall usually brings. Maybe this is just getting older? LOL.

Anyway anyway anyway, I’ve enjoyed many calmer weeks at home. Work has been slowish, running has ramped up, and I am loving life. Here’s what I’ve been…

…Reading: Since switching from driving to work to taking the metro, I’ve been flying through books! Since my last “this week”, I’ve read The Rest of Our Lives by Benjamin Markovits, The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie, The Secret Service of Tea and Treason by India Holton, and The Hounding by Xenobe Purvis.

I’m currently reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee and Gulp by Mary Roach. I still have many books from the library to get through! Anyone have a fun fall book recommendation? I’ve been enjoying cheesy romances lately.

…Eating: At home! But also going out far too much… It’s been nice to grocery shop and actually have healthy homemade meals. I think I mentioned in my last post that I was going to make peach cobbler and I did! How I waited so long into the summer to make this is beyond me. I love peach cobbler.

…Wearing: My Hdrop. I bought this little gadget last summer (I think) to learn more about my sweat rate and sodium losses. I forget to wear it most of the time, but I’ve been struggling with proper hydration the last few weeks so I knew it was time to try it out again. I am constantly amazed by how much I sweat and how much sodium I lose. I’ve been playing around with a different hydration strategy on long, sweaty runs and it seems to be working pretty well!

…Listening to: A Taylor Swift Folklore and Evermore combined playlist on Spotify. It’s perfect for this time of year! I like listening to it at work. It helps me enter a sort of flow state.

ALSO, Giggly Squad! The other week I desperately wanted something different to listen to on my run and recalled that this podcast is uber popular. Without knowing much about it, I gave it a try. At first I didn’t fully understand the hype around it, but after another episode I was fully in. I am laughing, I am learning, I am inspired to watch TV – lollll. Perfect chatty podcast for a run.

…Procrastinating: A number of random household chores and fixes. We have a light switch that we need to replace and a faucet to fix but I can’t bring myself to commit to doing them. And by that, I mean I need to force Patrick to do them and I’ll support the effort!

…Thinking About: What to do this weekend! I get summer Fridays in August, so I want to live it up. Patrick took Friday off too so that we could have fun together! I think the weather may finally start to cool off a tad this weekend. I’ve got a few big runs to do so hopefully we can hit the trails for those!

…Excited For: Hot yoga classes! I’ve been wanting to find a good hot yoga studio for a while and finally tried one on Monday. The class I took was specifically for hips, hamstrings, and spine and it was fantastic. I am planning to buy a 10 class pass and will try to go once a week. I can’t wait!

I hope you’re having a nice August so far. Whether you’re squeezing out the last bit of summer or looking forward to fall, take it one day at a time.

Love,

JN
