this week #69

Happy September! I know it’s not technically fall, but I’d love for Virginia to start reading the room and cool down. I don’t even need drastically lower temps – just cut us some slack with the humidity! Sheesh.

A beautiful shot from the world’s worst run at Prince William a few weeks ago…

Life has been nice for the last few weeks. I’ll do a light sprinkling of some random stuff we’ve been up to!

In a 54 hour work travel swing, I went to Nashville and San Antonio for hotel site visits. I had to run to the Parthenon while I was in Nashville!
I had such a lovely day doing some trail maintenance on Short Mountain this weekend. It wasn’t too hot and the foliage was so green. Plus we got ice cream after!
Earlier this summer I signed up for the Ashland Half Marathon (again!) sort of on a whim. Morning of, I tried to skip it because we had to get up very very early, but Patrick convinced me to go for it. Good thing because I PR’d again! I was so pleased considering PRing my half has not been my training focus whatsoever. Also, I was able to run faster without feeling quite as bad as last time. I’ll take it! On a less hilly course (or with a taper), I know I could go sub-2. One day!

We’ve got lots of trail running and volunteering throughout September, which I am looking forward to. Did I mention I finally got off the waitlist for a 100 miler at the end of October? Crazy! Here we go again…

Glorious forest road on the Signal Knob loop! A cool, beautiful morning with horrendous humidity.

On a separate note, today’s my one year anniversary at my “new” job. The past year has felt so long, and I can’t really explain why. A lot has happened, I guess? I’m not sure. It feels like I’ve been in this job for much longer!

Anyway, here’s what I’ve been…

…Reading: Since the last time I posted, I finished Pachinko, Gulp, and The Wager by David Grann (nonfiction that reads like fiction)! Now I’m reading The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood (because it sounded fun!) and I just started Tilt by Emma Pattee on the bus this morning. I need to find a good nonfiction book to balance this out.

I do most of my reading on the bus and metro these days. It’s lovely! Patrick walks me to the bus stop most mornings. ❤

…Eating: Frozen turkey meatballs. You guys, this is the ultimate life hack. For the last many months, I’ve always tried to keep frozen meatballs in the freezer. Making a pasta without a good protein option? Meatballs. Have some sort of veggie and grain bowl coming together? Add some meatballs. Are they expensive per pound compared to making meatballs yourself?? Yes! I try not to think about it! I am grateful that these are fully cooked and only have to be microwaved for 90 seconds. It is a shortcut worth splurging on.

…Trying: To figure out how to watch TV?? Last month Patrick and I started watching Only Murders in the Building, but we petered out after six episodes. Not because the show isn’t good (I have to know how murdered Tim Kono!) but because where is the time?? Yes, I could watch it right before bed, but that’s yoga and reading time. We were successful before because we were getting in bed extra early. That’s tough to do all the time. I’ll figure it out!

…Loving: Working out in the morning! In full disclosure, I bailed out on yesterday’s lift because all I wanted to do was drink coffee on the couch in the morning. BUT, I am mostly doing a good job of doing my lifts before work. Today I was successful! It feels so great to get moving and have that checked off my list so early. Plus, my new gym has a ton of windows so I can see the beautiful sunrise. An awesome bonus.

…Thinking About: How to improve my sleep. I swear that my sleep has absolutely exploded in the last month or so. I am usually such a deep, solid sleeper, but lately I have been waking up multiple times each night. I shift around a lot and generally don’t feel all that rested when I wake up. Last night I tried sleeping with a fan on my side of the bed and that helped. I love sleep, so this has been driving me nuts!

…Excited For: The fall! Surprise surprise. I have decided that I really want to lean into October and Halloween this year. It sounds so fun and cozy. Think: decorating and pumpkin-based foods and baked goods! Feel good Halloween movies and more Agatha Christie. I’m excited. I figured I have no issue dedicating a full month to Christmas, so I ought to take greater advantage of spooky season too!

Love,

JN
